High-back lounge seating and round tables for an office project in Melbourne

Upholstered high-back lounge seating, round tables, office desk items and packed components for a Melbourne office project, checked once after bulk production and loaded into two 40HQ containers in 2015.

Project overview

An office lounge package in two 40HQ containers

In 2015 we handled a Melbourne office project’s lounge seating and table package from China: upholstered high-back lounge seating, round tables, office desk items and a set of packed components. The goods were checked by our own team once bulk production was finished, and the order left China in two 40HQ containers.

For an FF&E contractor, a package like this is harder than it looks. Upholstered pieces and tables come from different kinds of production, each is packed its own way, and a high-back seat that looks right from the front can still show a problem on its side panel or back. The work was organised so that every product group had its own checklist before anything was wrapped for export.

The package, area by area

Three product groups, one shipment

Each group was checked against its own points before packing.

01

01 · High-back lounge seating

Materials and finish. Fabric-upholstered pieces. At the inspection each seat was photographed from the front, both sides and the back, and the fabric, cushion placement and wrapped condition were reviewed.

Quantity. Our record for this project gives no line-by-line count; the lounge seating shipped as part of the two 40HQ containers.

02

02 · Round tables

Materials and finish. Tabletop surfaces were checked close up, and each table’s leg structure and assembly were reviewed before protective wrapping went on.

Quantity. No per-line count is recorded; the tables travelled in the same two containers.

03

03 · Desk items and packed components

Materials and finish. Packed components were reviewed in their packing so that nothing was sealed away without being seen.

Quantity. Loaded together with the seating and tables.

How the order ran

How the package moved from factory to container

01

Scope and checkpoints agreed

The product list was split into seating, tables and packed items, and the points to check on each were fixed before goods were ready, so the inspection had a clear brief.

02

Suppliers coordinated, progress tracked

Our team was the single contact on the China side: we kept in touch with the suppliers and followed production progress against the export plan, then passed on one organised set of updates.

03

One inspection after bulk production

Once bulk production was complete, our own team inspected the goods once before shipment: seating from every side, tabletop surfaces, leg structure, assembly and packed condition. Clients are welcome to join this inspection.

04

Loading supervised, 2 x 40HQ

With the inspection photos in hand, the goods were loaded under our supervision and shipped to Melbourne in two 40HQ containers.

After shipment

What the photo record gave the project team

The project team in Melbourne received photos of the actual goods, taken from several angles and in their packing, rather than catalogue images. That gave them something concrete to sign off against before the containers sailed, and a record to go back to when the pieces arrived on site.

A larger office order for the same city, three 40HQ containers of mixed office furniture, is covered in our Melbourne office furniture case study. How we source seating, tables and storage for office projects is on our office furniture page.

Questions about this project

What was in this Melbourne office order?

Upholstered high-back lounge seating, round tables, office desk items and packed furniture components, shipped from China to Melbourne in two 40HQ containers in 2015.

When was the furniture inspected?

Once, after bulk production was complete and before shipment, by our own team. Seating was photographed from the front, sides and back; tables were checked for tabletop surface, leg structure and assembly; packed items were reviewed in their packing. Clients are welcome to join this inspection.

Why photograph high-back seating from the sides and back?

On a high-back seat the side panels and the back are large upholstered surfaces. A seat can look right from the front and still have a mark or finish problem on the side or back, which a front-only photo would not show.

Can FBM Furniture run the same process for our office project?

Yes. Send an FF&E schedule or product list, room by room, with quantities, plus drawings for any custom pieces, and tell us where the project is. Where your project fits our service, we can quote one product group first as a reference; if quality and terms fit, we continue with the rest.

Have an office lounge package to quote?

Send your FF&E schedule or product list and our team will review it, product group by product group.
