12 x 40HQ of custom furniture for an apartment project in Melbourne

Custom hotel-style room furniture, chairs, sofas and tables, sourced from several factories in China, inspected once when production was finished, and loaded into 12 x 40HQ containers for Melbourne.

Project overview

One furniture package, several factories, 12 x 40HQ containers

FBM Sourcing supplied 12 x 40HQ containers of custom furniture for an apartment project in Melbourne, Australia. The package was a full set of custom hotel-style room furniture together with chairs, sofas, tables and related loose furniture. The client sent drawings, furniture references and quantities; we matched each product group to the factory that makes it, had samples made and approved before production, inspected the goods once when bulk production was finished, and consolidated everything from the different factories into 12 x 40HQ containers for shipment to Melbourne.

An apartment project repeats the same room many times, so the work is in fixing one specification and holding it across production. Chairs, sofas, tables and custom room furniture carry different production risks, so the product list was reviewed by category rather than as one purchase: which items needed custom production, which details had to be confirmed by sample, and which products needed the closest checking at inspection.

What went into the 12 containers

The package was reviewed by product group, because each group comes from a different kind of factory and is checked against different details.

01

01 · Room package: custom hotel-style room furniture

Materials and finish. Material selection, colour tone, surface finish, edge treatment and hardware placement were confirmed at sample stage and became the reference for bulk production.

Quantity. Quantities were taken from the client’s schedule; the room package shipped as part of the 12 x 40HQ.

02

02 · Seating: chairs and sofas

Materials and finish. Upholstery, foam comfort, stitching, frame structure and frame stability were confirmed on the approved samples; seating and upholstery come from different factories than casegoods.

Quantity. Part of the same 12 x 40HQ package, consolidated with the room furniture for loading.

03

03 · Tables and loose furniture

Materials and finish. Dimensions, surface finish and packing protection were checked against the approved samples and drawings.

Quantity. Part of the same 12 x 40HQ package; shipped with the seating and room furniture.

How the order ran

From drawings to loaded containers

01

Quotation and factory matching

The client’s drawings, furniture references and quantities were reviewed by product group. Each group was matched to a factory by product category, workmanship, sample ability, export experience and willingness to follow project documentation, and quoted against the specification.

02

Samples and sign-off

Samples were made and shipped to the client for approval of appearance, dimensions, comfort and finish details before full quantities were confirmed. Revisions went back to the factories until the sample matched the drawings, and the approved sample became the production reference.

03

Inspection when production was finished

One inspection, when bulk production was complete and before shipment. The client and the project’s end customer attended in person, with our team supporting on the China side: dimensions, appearance, workmanship, structure, surface finish, upholstery details, stability, carton labels and packing protection were checked, and the inspection photos on this page are the record.

04

Consolidation and loading

Goods from the different factories were consolidated and loaded into 12 x 40HQ containers for Melbourne. Empty containers were checked, cartons arranged, sofas and chairs protected for export, and a loading record kept so the site team knew what was in each container.

After shipment

After the containers left China

We keep the project records: inspection photos, packing information and the communication with each factory, so a question raised during installation or after delivery can be traced to the factory and handled. For an office package from the same market, shipped in 3 x 40HQ containers, see our Melbourne office furniture case.
